A lesson in self-indulgence. If you have any exposure to Max Landis, you’ll instantly gravitate to the poles of love or hate. Here is a guy whose social dysfunction has him constantly restate he’s a guy no one likes because of his self-aware obnoxious personality and the only reason he’s in front of a camera is because he’s John Landis’ son. That said, when Max is on point, he’s a riot.
Canada Day came and went, but it’s excuse enough for me to share one of Canada’s great short films.
A year of letdowns and compromises results in a somewhat unenthusiastic list.
As my sixth year at TIFF, I decided to try something a little different. Rather than trying my hand at the toughest tickets, I would experiment with the smaller stuff. I wanted to see what kind of output was coming from Canadian short directors who range from students to veterans. I’ve been to many short festivals and screenings for Canadian stuff, but TIFF is probably the place to get the cream of the crop, one could only assume.
Few games earn the reputation that Shadow of the Colossus has gained for its breathtaking battles of epic scope. Yet most of the game is an experiment in minimalism. Its prestige combined with its relative anonymity gives it a strange sort of legendary status, suitable for such an enchanting game.
Countdown to a strong year.
One of the best episodes of The Twilight Zone succeeds through clever misdirection, great acting, and a concept that actually works within the television budget.
TIFF was good to me this year. Film festivals are a bit of a minefield, luckily I only hit one dud this year.
The visceral episode exposes the true horror behind an imminent nuclear attack and the people defenseless to stop it. Aired during the height of the Cold War, this is one of the most shocking episodes of The Twilight Zone ever.
